This Seed, in response to Zainab Amadahy’s ‘Stuck in Time’, natty abdou’s ‘entanglement as birthright’ and Diane Roberts’ ‘Úwaradaguágüda/Balance’ is an imagining of what it would be like to encounter joy as a partner in the creative dance.
The concept of reclaiming joy is a powerful one. In this Seed I explore an encounter with Joy as a formidable warrior and elder to be welcomed with honour, wonder and love. Joy is cast not as a commodity or a birthright, nor as an elusive emotion. I give her a strong, unavoidable, prickly presence that we can’t avoid and must come face to face to wrestle with.
Questions
What if Joy were also the one who meets us in the fire and wrestles with us in our creative dance?
How might this encounter create new possibilities for our relationship to Joy, with ourselves and with one another in collaboration?
What can she teach us individually and collectively?
