A self-confessed word nerd, I have 20 years of experience in marketing and communications for small and medium-sized charities – often as the one-woman band! I started my career as a freelance journalist writing about social issues impacting Toronto’s deprived communities. From there I honed my skills in charity communications and have written and produced editorial and promotional content for national and local charities and businesses, Three years as a tutor in English for Speakers of Other Languages have given me an added skillset in facilitation and training, as well as a deeper appreciation for cross-cultural communication.

This is an original seed

This Seed, in response to Zainab Amadahy’s ‘Stuck in Time’, natty abdou’s ‘entanglement as birthright’ and Diane Roberts’ ‘Úwaradaguágüda/Balance’ is an imagining of what it would be like to encounter joy as a partner in the creative dance.

The concept of reclaiming joy is a powerful one. In this Seed I explore an encounter with Joy as a formidable warrior and elder to be welcomed with honour, wonder and love. Joy is cast not as a commodity or a birthright, nor as an elusive emotion. I give her a strong, unavoidable, prickly presence that we can’t avoid and must come face to face to wrestle with.

Questions

What if Joy were also the one who meets us in the fire and wrestles with us in our creative dance?

How might this encounter create new possibilities for our relationship to Joy, with ourselves and with one another in collaboration?

What can she teach us individually and collectively?
